A Thai version of a basil seed drink uses seeds from sweet basil. Other types of basil seeds include hairy basil seeds, holy basil seeds and Thai basil seeds.

In Asian countries, such as Thailand, basil seeds are made into a canned drink. The intact seeds, combined with water, sugar, honey and sometimes coconut milk, create a thick drink with a consistency similar to tapioca. Also in Asia, it is the main ingredient in Italian cuisines.

Basil is commonly used in many Thai and Asian dishes. It can be made into a tapioca–like dish by soaking the seeds in water and letting the seeds swell, releasing antioxidants. In addition to being a enhancing flavors in dishes it also has health benefits! Basil seeds are commonly used to provide relief from stomach upset. Consumption of basil seeds may have an uplifting effect on your mood, as well as calming.
