Eucalyptus has been used to treat coughs and the common cold in United States and Europe for many years. Eucalyptus leaves have been used in teas and gargles to soothe sore throats and treat bronchitis and sinusitis.

Eucalyptus oil helps loosen phlegm, many people inhale eucalyptus steam to help treat coughs and flu.

The leaves and oil of the eucalyptus plant are used as medicine. Eucalyptus oil consists of the volatile oil made from the fresh leaves and branch tops of the eucalyptus plant. Eucalyptus leaves contain tannins, which are believed to help reduce inflammation; flavonoids, plant–based antioxidants; and volatile oils.

For relief of congestion, asthma, and respiratory problems, boil Eucalyptus leaves in water in a tightly covered pot, and then remove from heat and inhale the vapors. For an antiseptic bath, place Eucalyptus leaves in a mesh bag and hang under the bath faucet as you run a hot bath.
