size

Copal resin has been used by various indigenous peoples as an incense in sweat lodge ceremonies and other religious rituals.

While mainly used for its aromatic, incense–like properties, copal resin has also found use as an ingredient in wood varnishes.

Rev. 122013a

The dried natural resin, when burned, emits an odor akin to frankincense but with a lighter, citrusy tone.

To get the resin smoking, you need to heat charcoal until it's ashed over on the outside and red hot inside. Then you place the charcoal in a heat–proof container and then place a small piece of copal on top of the coals. A little bit (size of a pinky fingernail) smokes for a half hour or longer.
